These first drawings are of Ampris, the heroine of The Golden One. She is about 16 years old in human terms, and is a member of the Aaroun race enslaved by the Viis, the dominant reptilian race. Ampris has a coat of fur the color of a golden retriever, and is quite an elegant creature having grown up as a pet in a Viis palace. She wears two pieces of jewelry, a earring which represents her slave status and a necklace, the Eye of Clarity, from her home planet.
Terryl started drawing Ampris with more wolf-like features and then moved towards those more cat-like. She said art direction at this point in the creative process is extremely helpful. "You'll get a 'Hey yeah!', 'Kinda' or a 'Ewww.' They give you another spin on it. They might see something that will make the design better," Terryl said. "For Ampris, I knew they wanted a strong, honorable creature," Terryl said. In her designs the personality of the character is a major factor. "Ampris is a very noble creature, a character that people will like," said Terryl. |
